Brief Introduction of the City

Zhoushan is a treasure island located at the confluence of the Yangtze River and the southeast coast of China. It is the first largest island complex and also the sole sea island, harbor and tourist city under the jurisdiction of the province in our country. Large and small islands spread all over the borders of Zhoushan. The green surface of East Sea, which covers an area of ten thousand hectares, is dotted with 1390 islands like shining pearls, which forms a .splendid scene of “the city of one thousand islands”.

The area covers a total area of 22,200 square kilometers, with an east-west length of 182 kilometers and a north-south width of 169 kilometers.

In 1988, Zhoushan City was included on the list of the coastal economic open zone by the country.  In 1996, the city was admitted as a member unit of the economic coordination association of the central cities along the Yangtze River. It is one of the cities planned and developed first in the coastal economic zone and the Yangtze River Delta of China.

Zhoushan has the three advantages of fishing industry, harbor and tourism. It is the largest production, processing and sales base of marine products. Therefore, it is reputed as “fishing capital of China”. Zhoushan boasts a large number of harbors and bays and crisscrossing sea routes with deep water and calm waves. Hence it is an excellent natural deep-water harbor that can be counted on the fingers of your hand in our country. The well preserved natural scenery of Sea Islands in Zhoushan contains rich tourist resources. Up to now two national-level and two provincial-level tourist areas have been opened.

Blue sky, green sea, green islands, golden sand and white waves are the dominant tone of the Zhoushan tourist and ecological environment. Since the reform and Opening up, the government has led the development of tourist industrialization. The sea island tourism, which is featured by “marine culture, sacred Buddhist Mountain, seafood cuisine and seashore leisure”, becomes a pillar industry of Zhoushan City.
