Characteristic:First appearing in the Xianfeng and Tongzhi Periods of the Qing Dynasty, Yue Opera developed from the skill of “singing on the farmland” in some rural areas of Shengxiang, “singing in the street” to “singing at teahouse and pub”. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Yue Opera was rapidly developed with the most histrionic parties and the most widely spread in China, becoming an opera of national renown second only to Beijing Opera. During its long course of performance practice, through constant reformation, Yue Opera has formed a special style and taste, which is slowly, tireless and full of poetic and picturesque charm. Most of the plays originate from traditional stories, including “Lute”, “Hua Mulan”, “Thunderstorm”, “Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai”, “Dream of the Red Chamber”, “Xianglin Sister”, “Jade Hairpin”, “Meng Lijun” and “West Wing-room” etc.
