Shen's Garden has a history of over 800 years. In the early days, it was in large scale, covering as large as over 70 mu (a unit of area), being the famous ancient garden in the ancient city of Shaoxing. It is a private garden of a rich businessman whose family name is "Shen" in the southern Song Dynasty, whence comes the name. In 1963, Shen's Garden was identified as historical and cultural site under protection in Zhejiang Province. Lu You composed lots of poems during his life, but seldom composed so many in the same place. Because of these moving stories and poems, people take Shen's Garden as a place to monumentalize the poet as well as the bailment of their clinging love.
Covering 57 mu, Shen's Garden consists of three parts. According to historical scene or the cultural connotation of the garden, people distribute the sights in the three parts in order, such as Guhe (single crane) Pavilion, Banbi (half wall) Pavilion, Shuanggui Hall, Bayong House, Song Well, Shooting Garden, Wenmei Balustrade, Qin (musical instrument) Platform and Guangsi Room etc, which forms the ten attractions, including "Remnant Clouds and Sad Melody", "Poetry and Love", "Spring Stream of Amazing Beauty", "Remnant Wall and Eternal Regret", "Whining Lonely Crane", "Green Lotus Leaves Setting off the Sun", "Complaining Willow in the Palace Wall", "Stepping Snow and Asking about Clubs", "the Sent of Poetry Books" and "Exchanging Feelings in Que Bridge". In the district of historic sites, besides Calabash Pool and the small hill, which are the site of the original things of the Song Dynasty, most of the others are restored on the base of archaeological excavation. Located in the left side of the district of historic sites, East Garden is also called Lover's Garden, fully presenting features of the gardens in the south of the Yangtze River. Standing south of the district of historic sites, South Garden mainly consists of Lianli Garden and Lu You Memorial. Shen's Garden is in picturesque disorder with elegant hue, attractions setting off with each other, which is full of the flavor of the Song Dynasty. Lu You kept a life-long love of clubs. So, people planted lots of calyx canthus in the district of historic sites, which is full of the fragrance of flowers when they bloom. Visiting Shen's Garden in the winter has become an item of Speciality tourism in Shaoxing, especially when it snows, which will add some poetic and picturesque charm.
Background of Luyou
Lu You (1125—1210）, styled as Wuguan and also known as Fangweng, who was born in Shanyin of Yue Prefecture (present Shaoxing), was a great patriotic poet of the Southern Song Dynasty. During the ages of his life when the state was wantonly invaded by the Jin Dynasty, the weak imperial government compromised in order to seek momentary ease, capitulaitonists keeping the weather and the nation at risk. Lu You was so smart from a child that he could compose poems and poses at the age of 12; under the edification of patriotism of his family, he determined to dedicate himself to the service of his state when he was young. Suppressed by compromise force, Lu You failed to realize his proposition of reoccupying the Central Plains and reforming the maladministration. However, he was unswerving and always kept the unification of the state and composed a poem named "To My Son" to urge his offspring: " I know everything will be gone after my death, but I was grieved that I couldn't see the unification of our state, on the day when imperial troop march northward and reoccupy Central Plains, don't forget to tell your father when sacrificing. Lu You is a famous poets of high yield in the history of China, writing over 10,000 poems during his lifetime, over 9,300 of which are preserved till today. Having composed masterworks handed down from generation to generation include "Jiannan Poems" and "Weinan Collections" etc, he was the grandfather and the leading poet of the Jiannan Poetry School.
