The ancient music, called Dongjing or ritual music, was traditionally sung by Taoist monks in mountain caves in most areas of Yunnan province. It has been called a "fossil of Chinese music". As early as more than 1,000 years ago, the Naxi people had created the world-famous Dongba culture—including the pictographs, murals and Dongjing music. The Dongjing music originated in the Tang Dynasty and is still being played by the Naxi people with its antiquated, simple and elegant melodies. With Dongjing music enjoying growing fame both at home and abroad, its troupes have performed in Beijing, Hong Kong and Taiwan, and have toured other 20 countries, including the United States and Britain. Listening to ancient Naxi music, you do not need to use eyes or ears or any other sensory organs, but rather your heart.
