Mount Red gets its name from its henna color. The mountain is 1.5 kilometers long and 1 kilometer wide. It spreads from east to west, with an altitude of 910 meters and a relative height of 400 meters. Its purple sandstone was formed in the continental environment 250 million years ago.
Originally, Urumchi River was vast and mighty. Mount Red stands at the north bank the river, while Mount Yamalike in the south. Urumchi River became a square-built river-beach road, while the “Dragon-guard Tower” of Mount Red still stands there after 200 years’ wind and rains.
According to legend, long long ago, a red dragon ran away from the Heaven pool of Mount Bogeda. It was caught up by Holy Mother and cut into two pieces. Two mountains were formed where the dragon was cut. The one in the west was called Mount Yamalike, the east one was called Mount Red, while the sword became Urumchi river. Although that is only a legend, according to landform photos of aviation prospecting, Mount Red and Mount Yamalike are the all and the one. Due to stratum rupture, it was divided up into two mountains.
From the peak of Mount Red, looking to the east, there is a stone hill stretching west from Mount Bogeda to Urumchi River. The hill broke suddenly at the river, with its head standing tall and upright like a dragon. Mountain Red is rugged and steep; it is part of Mount Bogeda; there are legends about it; so, Mount Red is considered to be a holy place and worshiped by people. Local people regarded it as a place to offer sacrifice to Mount Bogeda.
In Sep. 26th, 1949, Sinkiang was liberated peacefully. To recover the beauty of Mount Red, people have worked hard. They planted a lot of tree there. At 1985, having Dragon-guard tower as the center, a hill garden came into being, which is today’s Mount Red Garden. Inside the garden, there are blacktop, telpher, pavilion and temples etc. In the top the mountain, one can enjoy the sight of Urumchi. It is the best place to enjoy the scenery of this border town.
