The Urumqi Botanical Garden was built in 1986. The Garden was created in order to collect wild botanical resources, protect plants in severe danger, construct a sustainable botanical landscape, and to showcase the botanical garden’s functions as both a scientific research facility and a tourist education center.
The garden covers an area of almost 60 hectares and hosts over 400 plant species. To date, there is a Chinese rose garden, a foot flower area, an insemination demonstration area, a grassland area, a landscape garden, a medicinal plants area and a desert plants area. The vast collection boasts 10 kinds of endangered plants alongside flourishing local flora like the rhaponticum carthamoides (Maral root) and abies sibirica ledeb (Siberian fir).
The first nationally protected plant, gingko, was planted successfully and grew well at the Garden. There is an intelligent greenhouse with an area of 730 square meters, three sunlight glasshouses with an area of 1800 square meters and one laboratory. The park continues to use their successful research achievements to create viable plant production in and outside the facility.
