Kizilsu Kirgiz Overview

Kizilsu has a splendid history dating back to the Old Stone Age. It is the birthplace of Xinjiang ancients. Since Qin and Han dynasties (221 BC-220AD), the regional government has been established in Kizilsu that was an inseparable part of China. The age-old historical culture, unique touring resources, rich national lifestyle, and abundant cultural accumulation in Kizilsu have cultivated its colorful minority culture and lifestyles. Manas epic is one of the gorgeous exotic flowers. This profound and extensive epic becomes an "Encyclopedia" on the history, culture, society, religion, military, and art of Kirgiz and enjoys great popularity at home and abroad. The two opened ports—Turgate and Yerkstan ports--and to be opened Beidali port  have helped the autonomous prefecture to gain exceptional advantages through developing frontier touring and shopping.

Artux City, the seat of Kizilsu Kirgiz Autonomous Prefecture, is located in the southwest of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region; it is situated at the south foot of Tianshan Mountains, and in the west edge of the Tarim Basin. Artux is a border city. Kashgar Region is its neighbor in the east and the south, and it borders Uqia County and Ahqi County in the west and the northeast. Eleven ethnic groups including Kirgiz, Uygur, Han, Hui, Kazak, Uzbek, and Manchu live in this autonomous prefecture.
