The original meaning of Yuqi Tashi is “three stones”. According to the local interpretation, Yuqi Tashi is grassland surrounded by three snowy mountains. These three snow-capped mountains are all over 4500 meters above sea level. Snow on their peaks never melts throughout the year. They are like three grey-white solid reservoirs. Every summer, the snow melts and forms streams. A great deal of stream water irrigates this large grassland and becomes the life well-spring of 100,000 livestock and 5,000 people in Yuqi Tashi Grassland. This natural pasture-land has an average altitude of over 3,000 meters, and the grass covering rate is over 80% .The grass quality is good, and the productivity is high. The average grass height is around 15 centimeters. In Yuqi Tashi Grassland, the hill is low with smooth slopes; the terrain is wide; the soil is fertile, contributed by the remains underground; the vegetation is varied, such as cogon needle, anertii, armoise, potentilla discolor, dandelion. It is the paradise for livestock and a treasuring land for pasturing since rain and snow are rich, water is adequate, and grass is luxuriant.
Every year, when summer comes, herdsmen from each village will loudly urge their livestock, as happy as they come to “Bazha” (Uygur language means market) converging here from all around. Yurts scatter all over the slope and gully like stars in the sky. One hundred thousand livestock spread on the grassland in groups or herds. The white is sheep herd; black is yak herd; red is steed herd. It is rather lively then. The sheep baa and chew the soft green grass; horses chase and look for the right spouse; yaks walk slowly and hunt for food; herdsmen walk among livestock with whips on their hands; bold and unrestrained sound of singing drifts over the grassland. The fragrance of milk and meat drifts from the yurts of Kirgiz herdsmen is welcoming guests who come a long way to here. The hospitable hosts treat the guests with yoghurt, kumiss, milk skin, butter, and milk cheese to let them feel full. Then they begin their leisure talks, and the topics are always about their experience of becoming rich through diligent work and the wonderful future brought by the government’s policy of enriching the people.
