Kalakuli Lake is among high mountains, with an altitude of 3,600 meters. It covers 10 square kilometers, and its depth is about 30 meters. It gains the name” Kalakuli” (in Kirgiz language it means dark lake) because of its deep and gloomy water.

Ordinarily, the water is bluish green. When torrential rain comes, the water turns into grey dark immediately. Kalakuli is from Kirgiz language, and it means dark water lake. Every dawn, the lake looks like a blackish green mirror. When the sun rises, the water will begin to change its color to powder blue, cream yellow, pink, etc. and makes tourists feel they are in the paradise. On the lake bank stands the Pamir Mountain Villa, providing tourists a place for accommodation and rest.

The father of glaciers ---Muztag, stands to the east of the lake, and to the west, extends the serpentine Surkuler mountain chain. The grassland lies to the south of the lake. When summer comes, the grass is greener, the water is more pure. Along with the beautiful lake and mountains, white yurts scattering all over the green grassland like stars in the sky and the white and luminous g lacier reflecting in the pure water add radiance and beauty to each other. This scene is like a poem saying “wind blows, grass bends, and cattle come into sight”. The pastoral songs drifting over the grassland, the wild ducks swimming on the lake, such scene is as fantasy and dream, no wonder in the 10 century BC, when Zhou Mu wang (the 5th king of Western Zhou dynasty （around 1100 BC-around 771BC）) came and highly appraised it after enjoying the wonderful view.
