Hetian lies in the southernmost part of Sinkiang, and it was called "Yutian" in ancient times, which means "place of jades" in Tibetan language. Hetian is one of the important towns in the southern route of the Silk Road. At the beginning of Qing Dynasty, the city changed its name from "yutian" to "hetian". In 1959, it got its present name. It boasts of wonderful view of the world's second largest desert, the site of the Silk Road with a history of two thousand years, and other humanic views such as the oasis as a result of the struggle between mankind and the nature, and the thousand miles long grape belt.
Hetian has rich tourism resources with their unique features, such as the towering jokuls, the magnificent glacier, deep and serene grottos, ancient petroglyphs, the eerie mountains and basins, the mysterious deserts and jungles, the world's number one floating desert, the weird and strange Red and White mountain, the broad grassland, the beautiful lakes and ponds, the rural scene with interlaced trees, and the giant walnut king tree, fig king tree, grape king tree and the phoenix king tree with a history of several hundred years; it also has many divine hills and those ancient castles, riverbed, battle field and signal fire tower with deep color of myth; and the Hetian river which is the only one traversing the Great desert of Takelamagan, and is called the "Warrior River" by all the explorers. Besides, the Hetian River's two branch rivers: Yulongkashi and Kalakashi are world known for the production of Nephrite and emerald jade.
From the ancient times, Hetian has long been famous for its abundant crops and opulent fruits and flowers, and is world renowned for the production of jade, silk and carpet, so it is a famous "Home of jade", "Home of silk", "Home of carpet", and "Home of fruits". It is a rich and prolific land, for it contains rich natural resources and has created wonderful technologies, making it suitable for agricultural production and stock raising industry. One thousand year ago, "Yutian Music" has been widely popular among the Hans, making them deeply obsessed, and now, Hetian's songs and dances still possess unique artificial charm.
