The altitude of Tianchi Lake of Tianshan is 1,980 meters and it is a natural mountainous lake. The surface of the lake is a semi-lunar shape. The length of the lake is 3,400 meters and the widest width of the lake is 1,500 meters and its area is 4.9 kilometers. Water in the lake is clear and transparent. Tianchi Lake is surrounded by mountains where greens and wild flowers are beautiful. And there are erect verdant pines and China spruces around the mountains. Bog da Mount is located in the southeast of the lake. In Mongolian the words “Bog da” means holy mountain. The altitude of Bog da Mount is 5,445 meters. Totally there are three mountain peaks which are standing together: one is the main peak and the other two are sided ones. All three mountain peaks look like a pen holder. There are un-melted snow and glacier over the peaks where silvery light are reflected and mirrored with the water of the lake to make a charming natural picture which is made of the lake on Bog da Mount. In fact, Tianchi Lake is a kind of moraine lake. Tianchi Lake of Tianshan is not only a summer resort for tourists home and abroad, but also an ideal mountainous rink. In winter there are snow lotus, wild snow pheasant around the snow line of the mountains. And there are roes and mushrooms and other China traditional medicines like Dangshen, roots of membranous milk vetch among pine forests. There are rare animals and birds in valleys and there are fishes in the lake and water birds around the lake . And there are mines like copper, iron, mica and so on. And there are glaciers around the peaks of the mountains. In a word, there are so bountiful natural resources and peculiar scenic spots around the lake that lots of geographical scholars, geological scholars and biological scholars are much deeply interested by the charms. In the year1982, Tianchi Lake of Tianshan is listed as one of key natural scenic spots in China.

Mount of Horse Tooth is located in the southwest of the lake. There is about 34 kilometers in line from the mount to the lake. And there are extremely narrow horse roads from the west of the lake to its peak. However, it is very difficult to pass the extremely narrow horse roads because of obstacles of almost sheer slopes full of jagged stones. The altitude of Mount of Horse Tooth is 3,056 meters. And it is the highest mount among the mounts of the west of the lake. Its whole shape is somewhat like a pyramid and it is made of gravels and tuffs. The peaks of Mount of Horse Tooth are very spectacular and attracting. Wandering in them, tourists would think they were walking leisurely in Zhangjiajie, a very famous scenic spot for its peaks in China. The name of Mount of Horse Tooth is from its tooth shape observed far.

Mount of Lamp Post is located in the west of the lake. And there are extremely narrow roads from it to its peak. It is 2,718 meters high. Its top is like a pyramid. And its contour line of 2,500 meters is like a triangle. The slopes of its northeast and northwest are triangular. Its body is made of gravels and tuffs, where most are covered by soil and vegetation. In old times, the local Taoists around Tianchi Lake once set up a huge wooden post and hung a red lamp on it-an auspicious symbol. So the Mount was named as Mount of Lamp Post.

The name of “the holy calming needle of Tianchi Lake” is from a simile and it is a legendary elm with long history. The scenic spot of the elm is located in the north of The Lake. It neighbors the water of the lake closely. The elm has been sliding towards the lake. The height of the elm is about 15 meters and its diameter of its crown is about 25 meters and the diameter of its body is 80 centimeters or so. The iron rails around the elm have been set up for protection. And there is a cement terrace which is used to support the sliding branches of the elm. It is a miracle that the water of the lake never floods the root of the elm although there is only about 5 meters from the root to the water of the lake. So people think god is there and they explained the phenomenon is like a fairy tale. It is said in old times there was an evil dragon into the water of the lake that did lots of evil actions like flooding farmer fields and houses. After the goddess of Princess Wang in heaven knew it she decided to save the local people and control the evil dragon and put her gold hair pin along the bank of the lake. Then the water of the lake ebbed quickly below the gold hair pin and never flooded to hurt the local people. Lately, the gold hair pin turned into the elm to protect the local people forever out of flood. The fairy tale reflects a wish that people wish to live a peaceful and favorable life. Of course, the fairy tale about the elm adds the charms to the scenic spot around Tianchi Lake of Tianshan. Today home or foreign tourists can visit and appreciate the elm from its support rails and support terrace.
