Bositeng Lake, called “West Sea” in ancient times, was called “Fish Sea” in Tang Dynasty (618-907), and got the name Bositeng Lake until the middle of Qing Dynasty (1616-1911). Located in the south-east side of Yanqi basin and within the boundary of Bohu county, it is the biggest interior fresh water alternately inflow-outflow lake in China.
Bositen nao’er (lake) means “be on one’s feet” in Mongolian, and gets this name as three centre lake mountains standing in the lake. Bositeng Lake is 14 kilometers far from Bohu County, and 24 kilometers from Yanqi County. The surface of the lake has an elevation of 1,048 meters, with the length of 55 kilometers from the east to the west as well as the width of 25 kilometers from the south to the north. It shapes a bit like a triangle and the area of the big lake is 988 square kilometers. There are over ten small lake areas of different size in the south-west part of the big lake, and the relatively big lakes can be found in these small lake areas, with a total area of 240 square kilometers. The south-east part of the lake is deeper, and the deepest one is 16 meters while the shallowest one is only 0.8 to 2 meters, all of which has the average depth of around 10 meters. Bositeng Lake, with a total area of 1228 square kilometers, develops and prospers together with snowy mountains, lakes, forests, desert, unique birds, and special beasts, which set each other off to form a very rich and colorful scenic picture. The vast water area of the big lakes, mists and ripples of the lake, as well as the mingled color of sky and water, all help it gain the reputation as a pearl in the seas of the desert. The small lake area, with green reeds and fragrant lotus leaves, as well as winding and deep path, is praised as “the Land of Peach Blossoms”( a fictitious land of peace, away from the turmoil of the world).
Bositeng Lake has rich reeds resources and wild animals which can be found everywhere here, with frequent going and coming of some rare animals like Mongolian gazelle and wild deer. In the lake, there has even been precious fingerling lips fish (cod) and Talimu crack abdomen fish (pipefish). There are several underground hot springs with a diameter of 10 to 30 meters to the east part of the center Bositeng Lake. In summer and winter, hot water is spouted out and the lake water flows out from the south-west corner as the source of Peacock River. In the south-east bank of the lake is the Ailexunwula desert with an area of 691 squire kilometers, whose extremely dry desert has formed a striking contrast with the vast lake and reed wetland.
