In bigger cities, such as Beijing and Shanghai, some people can speak English. In 3, 4 and 5 star hotels, everyone is required to speak good English. Mandarin is spoken throughout China. People in Hong Kong and part of mainland China speak Cantonese. English is the first foreign language of China and becoming more and more popular. But even though, without a English-speaking guide, you need to have some important information both in Chinese and English in case you need help to go back.
Note: In each hotel you stay, you can get hotel information card both in English and Chineses at the front desk.
