When we passed the Nine Horse Mount of Guilin by boating, a Chinese student asked me to count the horses in the cliff of this mountain. After I counted it, I answered that there were 8 horses in it. And this Chinese student said that "you are a clever man". What's the meaning of him? Did he judge whether I was clever or not just by my answer of his question?

Well, actually, there is a very long and interesting legend about the horses of Nine Horse Mount of Guilin. But after this legend, there is a saying goes that if who could count all the nine horses of Nine Horse Mount, he or she will be regarded as the most clever person in the world. So after you counted eight horses, this Chinese student complimented you that you were a clever person.
