What’s the function of the Overhanging Great Wall?

It is one part of Great Wall, but to Jiayuguan, I want to know whether its function is the same as the other part of Great Wall or not?

The Overhanging Great Wall is an important part of the defensive work of Jiayuguan Pass.

The great wall was built to keep the nomadic tribes outside of central China.
