Of the many artistic levels to be enjoyed in China, Tianjin Shidiao is unique. Popular since the Ming Dynasty and revived recently (since the 1920's it has been gaining in popularity), this localized form of folk singing was mainly sung by boatmen, porters and rickshaw drivers. Normally sung by one person, but some special songs also allow two singers. Since early last century there appeared professional performers who earn their living staging performances. Many works are presented that allude to their origins, songs with titles such as: Flying Kite; Single Man Crying for His Wife; Being Sad for Autumn in Qin Building; Throwing Watermelon, Red Rock Ode etc.
