Huanglong Valley is a calc-sinter ridge. It looks like a dragon, resting on the silver snow-capped mountains. Huanglong Scenic and Historic Interest Area has the typical features of Karst landform. It is the largest-scale Karst landform, with best preservation and various shapes in the world. The clear spring flows down along the snow mountains. There is the splendid beach at Huanglong Valley. It calls Jin Sha Pu Di, which means the land is covered by golden sand. It is the largest calc-sinter flow in the world. There are ponds with unique shapes, such as the Colorful Pond, Zhengyan Pond, etc. There is the largest calc-sinter cave-Xishen Grotto. Huanglong Scenic and Historic Interest Area looks like a golden dragon lingering in the deep valleys. It is really "the Holy Land and the Paradise in the earth".

The splendid calc-sinter landform wriggles along the primitive forest. Over 3000 ponds scatter in the shape of terraced fields. Those ponds form eight groups of ponds, which look like the scales of the golden dragon. There are rich resources in the main scenic area of Huanglong Valley. Over 3400 ponds scatter in the valley, and the calc-sinter flow with over 80,000 square kilometers lies along the dense forest. The waterfalls and those caves make Huanglong Valley more mysterious. Huanglong has rich resources of plants and animals, too. Therefore, it has been listed as “the protection area of biosphere in the world”. There are national first class protection animals, such as giant pandas, Golden Snub-nosed Monkeys, takins, Clouded Leopards, Lophophorus lhuysii, Chinese Hazel Grouse, etc. There are over 21 kinds of the national second class protection animals, such as small Lesser Pandas, Small Indian civets, lynxes, Steppe cats, etc. Moreover, more than 1500 kinds of original plants grow in Huanglong Valley. As a result, Huanglong Valley becomes the shelter of many plants and animals.

Yingbin Pond

When entering Huanglong Scenic and Historic Interest Area, visitors can see many colorful ponds at their first sights.

Those ponds have different sizes, and scatter in proper orders. Lush trees are lined around the banks of the ponds. In spring time, kinds of flowers, butterflies, birds are all around the ponds. Besides, the paths and pavilions serve as foils to the beautiful natural scenery.

Those ponds are as smooth as mirrors. In good days, the reflections of sun, mountains and tree in the ponds are very colorful. The colorful ponds make people touch the nature closer than before.

Great Waterfall—Fei Pu Liu Hui

After visiting Yingbin Pond, visitors can see a waterfall flows from a rock with the height of over 10 meters and the width of over 60 meters. It flows in tens of steps. In some steps, it looks like a pearl curtain, while in some steps, it looks like water silk.

The cliff at the back of the waterfall is the calc-sinter sedimentation. As the color is golden, the whole waterfall looks very gorgeous. When the sun shines it, it seems like the colorful clouds. It looks as if the pond at the top of the waterfall contains courage and strong life. It leads the waterfall to sing loudly to the nature. As a result, people here can appreciate the natural harmonization of its noise and silence.

Xishen Grotto

Xishen Grotto is the cave under a calc-sinter stone with the width of 40 meters. The whole grotto is one meter in height, and 1.5 meters in width. There are light yellow or milky white Stalactites. It is inspected that the grotto is the drainage of ancient glaciers.

At the entrance of the grotto, there is full of water fog. It is said that the grotto is a place for immortals to take baths. It was said that the immortals always washed away their worldly vulgarity in this grotto before they started to cultivate themselves. And it was also said that unproductive women can get pregnant, after washing in the grotto. Those legends make the grotto more mysterious. Although the story has no scientific proves, some women expect to be pregnant after entering the grotto. Once a French couple entered the grotto without any clothes, in order to be pregnant by the pray of immortals.

Calc-sinter Land covered by Golden Sand(Jin Sha Pu Di)

Jin Sha Pu Di is the calc-sinter flow with 1500 meters in length and 70~120 meters in width. It is said by experts that Jin Sha Pu Di is the largest calc-sinter flow in the world, which is the most splendid and colorful one as well.

The land is covered with the golden color mainly, together with some milky white, gray, dark green ones. On the surface, there flows shallow water. People can’t help touching themselves deeply in the hearts after seeing the amazing natural scenery.

Ponds of Potted Landscape

At the left of Jin Sha Pu Di, there are over 100 ponds scattering in a proper order. They are called the Ponds of Potted Landscape. The buttons of the ponds have the colors of yellow, white, brown, gray, etc. The surface of the ponds looks as smooth and clear as mirrors. On the banks of the ponds, there are lush trees and grasses. The whole group of ponds seems like a quality suggestive of poetry and painting.

Mirror Ponds

The Mirror Ponds lies at the left of Jin Sha Pu Di. The whole group has over 80 ponds in total. The ponds are very close to the forest. Therefore, it is very magnificent with the inverted reflection in water. The scenery of the reflection changes at the same time as the season’s change. Especially in fall, the reflection in water changes to the red scenery, as the leaves become red. Some young visitors always regard the ponds as mirrors to make up their clothes. And the Mirror Ponds are the favorite places for photographers.

Colorful Ponds of Azaleas

Colorful Ponds of Azaleas are located at the upper of the Mirror Ponds. The whole group of ponds is covered by lush trees and azaleas. There are over 16 kinds of azaleas at Huanglong Valley. As they have different blossom time, they are in flowers in two periods once a year.

In spring, the flowers are mainly pink, while white in summer. When fall comes, leaves change to red and yellow. Their reflections in water are very gorgeous. In winter, all leaves are frozen with the white snow. Every season has its own fantastic feature and distinct beauty here.

Zhengyan Colorful Ponds

The group of Zhengyan Colorful Ponds is originated from the left of Huanglong Valley. It has totally more than 500 ponds. Thus, it is the largest scale of colorful ponds group at Huanglong Valley. It is also the calc-sinter ponds group with most different colors. It is said by experts that Zhengyan Colorful Ponds are as beautiful as Plitvice, the National Park in Yugoslavia.

Some pond banks are golden, while some are silver. Some ponds look like lotus, some like leaves of lotus; some are so small that can be hidden into one’s sleeves, while some are as big as farm lands.

The water is so clear that withered tree sticks and aquatic plants under the button can be seen clearly. Because the different depth and the different reflections of sunshine, each pond has its own characteristic features. Some are as pure as angels, some are as gorgeous as pictures. Some are silent, some are vigorous.

Ridge of Sleeping Beauty

The huge ridge seems like a sleeping Tibetan beauty, who wears long traditional Tibetan dress and ornaments. Under blue sky and white clouds, she sleeps as an angel silently and peacefully.

Huanglong Cave

Huanglong Cave lies at 10 meters far from the left of Huanglong Temple. There is a visiting hall, which is 10 meters far from the entrance. The hall is 30 meters in height, 20 meters in width, 50 meters in length, and has an area of over 1000 square meters. There are lots of stalactites in the hall. Three sitting images of Buddha are on the left step of the hall, which were carved in the Ming Dynasty. Their bodies are covered with calc sinter. They are the perfect combination of nature and human arts. In every winter, there are ice rocks, ice waterfalls, etc, so that making a wonderful white picture of ice scenery in the cave.

Flower-spinning Pond

The Flower-spinning Pond is about 10 meters far from the Colorful Ponds, with the total area of 4 square meters. It is hidden by the lush bushes in the high hills. Several springs surge out from the button of the pond, therefore, hundreds of waves spread on the surface. If some flowers or leaves are thrown into the pond, they will turn and spin with different rhythms. During Huanglong Temple Fair, lots of young couples will come to the Flower-spinning Pond to practice divination by throwing flowers or coins.

Huanglong Ancient Temple

It is about 3.5 kilometers far from the entrance of Huanglong Valley. Visitors can rest at the middle temple. According to <Songpan History>, Huanglong Temple was the place where Immortal Huanglong cultivated himself. Huanglong Temple was consisted of the front temple, the middle temple and the back temple. Each temple was 2.5 kilometers distance between each other. However, the front temple was destroyed. It only left the relic now. There are five halls in the middle temple, with an area of 1000 square meters. The present Buddha Hall lies at the middle temple. It has the altitude of 3558 meters and the area of 2100 square meters. The images of the eighteen Arahants are preserved well in the Buddha Hall. The buildings of the temple preserve well up till now. As the legend says, a yellow dragon from the East China Sea came to help Dayu in preventing the floods. In order to memorize him, people built the temple. Another tale says that Huanglong, the yellow dragon, built the temple by himself after he became the immortal. There is a statue of the humanized yellow dragon with a yellow Taoist dress in the temple.

Huanglong Temple occupies about 700 square meters. It is a Buddhist temple. It had 5 halls in total, and they are Lingguan Hall, Mile Hall, Tianwang Hall, Dafo Hall and Buddha Hall. And now, there are only Buddha Hall and the eight Arahants left. In the hall, tea, instruments, tourist keepsakes are provided.

The back temple is 2.5 kilometers far away from the middle temple. The temple is very grand and unique. There is a huge dragon picture on the gate of the temple.

The hill around Huanglong Temple calls Dragon-hidden Hill. On the peak of Xuebaoding, there are glacier landforms with good development. The temple fair is held every year in the front of Huanglong Temple. The area within one square kilometer at the back of Huanglong Temple is the essential spot at Huanglong Scenic and Historic Interest Area.

At 100 meters far from the back of Huanglong temple, there is Longwang Temple. On every June 15th of the lunar calendar, there is a temple fair. At that time, people of Tibetan, Qiang, Hui and Han nationality come here to celebrate the harvest and pray for the fortune at the temple fair.

1. Because of the high  altitude, the temperature at day time is quite different with at nights. So  visitors should prepare enough clothes, rain gears, medicine, and food.

2. People may feel  uncomfortable, because of the altitude reaction, especially when on the way to  Huanglong. So they can eat more fruits to reduce the altitude reaction. Or they  can buy oxygen bags at local epidemic prevention stations. There is the SOS  center for the altitude reaction at Zhuchuan  Temple.

3. The landform is very  complicated. So visitors had better travel in groups. 

4. It has plenty of rainfalls in May to  September. So, the mountaineers should be more careful.
