The 468 meters high tower, which is the highest in Asia and the third highest in the world, was put into construction on July 30th, 1991 and completed on October 1st, 1994. It faces the Bund across the Huangpu River. With eleven steel spheres in various sizes hanging from the blue sky to the green grassland, the body of the tower creates and admirable image, which is described in an ancient Chinese verse as: Large and small pearls dropping on a plate of jade. a. The Oriental Pearl Tower is one of the first buildings in the newly developed Pudong district (be sure to have a look at the photographic time line over the entrance) and it offers the best panoramic view over Shanghai. Even though the tickets are quite expensive, it is still worth it. Be sure to go there on a clear day though, in fog it is only a waste of money. You can also combine it with the Shanghai Historical Museum in the basement of the tower.
