It all depends on how deep and close you want to get in touch with the places. Beijing needs at least months for a thorough understanding of its intricating history, culture. But if you only want to scratch teh surface, then 6 days are enough, 3 days in Beijing and 3 days in Shanghai.
Suggested itinerary in Beijing:
Day 1: visit the The Tian''anmen Square, The Forbidden City, Hall of Clocks and Watches, Temple of Heaven.
Day 2: visit the Great Wall
Day 3: Summer Palace, the Olympic Venues(Bird''s Nest, Water Cube)
Itinerary in Shanghai
Day 1: visit the Nanjing Road, French concession region
Day 2: Oriental Pearl TV Tower, Huangpu River Cruise(from South bund to Wusong), Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall
Day 3: YUyuan Garden.

Hello, Leana, China is a time capsule. Beijing and Shanghai represent its ancient cultures and modern miracles respectively. I think you can spend five days in Beijng and three days in Shanghai, for history and culture need more time to experience and moreover you can spend some time to a post-olympic tour, visiting the Olympic Venues in Beijing, such as the Bird''s Nest and the Water Cube. Besides, I want to recommend another city which is really worthy of visiting: Xi''an. The incredible 2000 year-old Terracotta Warriors, Forest of Stone Steles Museum, Big Wild Goose Pagoda in Xi''an may interest you. Then you can spend two days in Shanghai, two days in Xi''an and four days in Beijing. Wish you a good trip!
