There are two theories about the origin of the name of Huanglong. One is that the place is named after the Huanglong Temple. Legend has it that in remote antiquity, the Yellow Dragon settled here as a recluse after helping King Yu harnessing the rivers, and eventually achieved immortality. Another theory attributes the name to the main scenic sight of the place, a huge deposit of yellow travertine that is formed by the evaporation of water from the summit of mountain and that meanders its way down the slope like a colorful golden dragon gyrating its way across snowy mountains and through dense forests. Both theories are relevant to the dragon that is a symbol of the Chinese nation.
