Phoenix Mountain

Phoenix mountain can compete with Mount Hua in terms of grotesqueness and steepness although it is not as high as Mount Hua, one of the Five Most Sacred Mountains in China. The roads on Phoenix Mountain, like the ridge of old oxen, are slippery and hard to walk on. Since there is no step, tourists can only climb the mountain with the help of iron railings. In freezing winter time, the mountain roads will become very dangerous and even impossible for one to take. It is no less steep and grotesque than the Canglong Ridge on Mount Hua. Besides, the plank road on Phoenix Mountain is connected to the middle of the cliff in an incline way. Without the iron railings, the plank road would go beyond the reach of climbers even not in cold winter days, just like the Changkong Plank Road in Mountain Hua.

The roads on Phoenix Mountain extend continuously, which is unique beyond comparison. Tourists on Phoenix Mountain therefore should seek their road ahead with patience. When you spot stone handles or iron rings among rocks, remember to make good use of it and continue the climbing further. You will enjoy the fantastic scenery after the zigzag mountain road is finished. Sometimes when you jump from one stone onto another, you will find in fact there is road under your feet. It is a feeling of saving life from despair. 

Phoenix Mountain has a big hole as if shot by a flying arrow. It is said that the hole was made by Xue Rengui, a General in early Tang dynasty when he expedited the eastern territory. It sounds like a myth, but shows the grandness of the “Arrow hole”. Looking from afar, it seems to be a round, bright moon, no less attractive, mysterious than the Moon Mountain in Yangshuo.

Phoenix Mountain is not only grand and steep, but is famous for its elegance and exquisiteness. For instance, there are Phoenix Cave, Sanjiaotang Cave, and Paradise Cave, all of which are deep, winding and remote. In addition, springs in Phoenix Mountain like Fenglei (means the tears of phoenix) Spring boast of clear and crystal-like spring water. Both the caves and springs are well-known tourist attractions on Phoenix Mountain.

Most ancient buildings on Phoenix Mountain were constructed in Ming and Qing dynasty. They are characterized by Buddhist and Taoist temples, the co-existence of which reflects the perfect combination of Buddhism and Daoism. Famous constructions here include Sanguan Temple, Ziyang Temple, Buddhist Pavilion, etc, Dotted in the middle of the mountain, they are quite attractive with red walls, yellow roofs, and flying-eaves.
