Duanqiao Bridge over Yalu River is made of iron. It is 944 meters long and 11 meters wide. The bridge can move by 90℃ with the forth hole in the middle as the axis, and is thus very convenient for transportation. In April, 1943, the Japanese invaders who colonized Northeast China and North Korea constructed the second bridge no less than 100 meters off the Duanqiao Bridge. During the war against American invaders, two bridges over Yalu River became the main transportation artery for supporting Koreans. Therefore the Americans tried to bomb the bridges for many times. The first bridge was finally destroyed in November, 1950, and only its middle part is retained as today’s Duanqiao which means a broken bridge in Chinese.
The first bridge now has been designated as a cultural relic at the provincial level. It was repaired for the first time as a war site in 1993 when it was given the name “Duanqiao Bridge over Yalu River”. The bridge is painted with a light blue so as to tell the later generations that we should never forget the history of colonization and the war of invasion on our nation but make contribution to safeguard world peace. The five golden characters “Duanqiao Bridge of Yalu River” on the copper plaque hung in the middle of the steel girder were written by Chi Haotian, a famous Chinese calligrapher. The numerous bullet traces on the bridge are real testimony of Chinese people safeguarding their nation. Like an old man of history standing in the river, Duanqiao Bridge signifies and records the great deeds of Chinese Voluntary Arm.
