Iron Tower
It is a main historic and cultural site of the Beigu Mountian. It is beside the Qinghui Pavilion. Built in the first year of Yuanfeng Period in the North Song Dynasty (1078), it has got a history of more than nine hundred years. It was originally a nine-storied building. However, the upper seven stories have been destroyed due to tsunami during the Wanli Period in the Ming Dynasty. When the tower was renovated, it was transformed into a seven-storied building. During the period of Guangxu’s reign in the Qing Dynasty, the upper five stories were ruined once again due to lightning strike. Before liberation the Iron Tower was dilapidated. After liberation the local government placed great emphasis on the renovation of the tower and added the two remaining fourth and fifth stories, which were the imitations of the Ming Dynasty. When it was rebuilt, there were a set of cultural relics excavated from the base of the tower, including golden coffin, silver outer coffin, remains of monks and carved stones inscribed by Li Deyu. It is learned from cultural relics that in the first year of Baoli Period in the Tang Dynasty (825), it was built by Li Deyu, a prime minister who had been the provincial governor of Runzhou for three times, and destroyed during the Ganfu Period. The Iron Tower was built at the site of the stone tower during the Yuanfeng Period in the Song Dynasty.
Inscribed Horizontal Tablet of “Pure Land in Nanxu”
It is a rectangular block stone with grand and elegant handwriting, which giving a massive appearance. It is now embedded horizontally in the slope wall of the Nectar Temple on the Beigu Mountain. It is said that during the period of Three Kingdoms Liubei came to the state of East Wu in order to marry into the bride’s family. After the feast, Sun Quan accompanied Liu Bei to admire the sceneries of the river. When Liu Bei saw the Beigu Mountain stood grandly at the bank of the river that flew eastward and stretched to the horizon, which showed a magnificent vigor, he couldn’t help but give favorable comments: “The Beigu Mountain is indeed the first landscape under the heaven”. Later when Emperor Wu of the Liang Dynasty took a tour of the Beigu Mountain, he saw the extremely magnificent sceneries of the river and mountains and hence wrote down the characters of “the First Landscape under the Heaven” with great gusto, which were left on the mountain and missing afterwards. During the Song Dynasty, Wu Ju, a famous collector, rewrote these characters. During the period of Kangxi’s reign in the Qing Dynasty (1665), they were copied and carved in stone and embedded in the wall of the corridor by Cheng Kangzhuang, a controller-general of the Zhenjiang Prefecture.
There is a pavilion with painted beam and flying eaves, which is located at the north back of the Nectar Temple and faces the river in the north. This is just the Multi-view Tower. It ranks with the Yellow Crane Tower of Hubei and Yueyang Tower of Hunan as the three famous towers in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River.
The Multi-view Tower was built in the Tang Dynasty. Its name was adopted from the poetic conception of “many views hanging on the window” in the poem of the Linjiang Pavilion written by Li Deyu, a prime minister of the Tang Dynasty. It is a two-storied building with cloisters leading to four directions and views at all faces. It is also reputed as the “first tower under the heaven”. Since there is a sentence of “the first tower under the heaven” in the poem of Multi-view Tower written by Mi Che, a great calligrapher and painter in the Song Dynasty, Mi Che wrote these characters as the stele of the tower, which is now still on the gate at the bottom floor of the Multi-view Tower.
The Multi-view Tower also has quite a few alternate names. It is said that during the period of the Three Kingdoms Liu Bei recruited his spouse in the Nectar Temple and Wu Guotai, the mother of Sun Quan, got look at her prospective son-in-law here. Therefore, it is also called Xiangxu (Getting Look at Prospective Son-in-law) Tower. When Sun Shangxiang, the sister of Sun Quan, got married, she got dressed here. Hence, it is also called the Dressing up Tower.
