It is a magnificent sight that an extremely long city wall surrounds the capital of Jiangsu Province—Nanjing, just like a mother takes her baby in arms. We name the wall as the Ancient City Wall or Ming City Wall. As a huge ancient project and the pride of Nanjing's people, it took 21 years to finish the great construction, which involved 200,000 laborers to move 7 million cubic meters of earth (From 1366 to 1387).

The city wall was designed by Emperor Zhu Yuan Zhang after he founded the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and established the capital in Nanjing more than 600 years ago. In the old days, it had been used as a military defensive project to defend the city, mostly built of bricks, stone and earth. The ancient wall is 33.7 km-long and with a height and top width ranging from 14 meters to 21 meters. It is said that the ancient wall was the longest and best preserved city wall in the world. It is also the most visual and eloquent witness of the history and the crystallization of science, technology, military, architecture and art.
