AS capital of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Hohhot which means Green City in Mongolian is the political, economic and cultural centre of the region. It lies in the middle south part of Tumote Plain, facing the Yellow River in the south and backing rolling Yinshan Mountains in the north.
The city governs Yuquan District, Xincheng District, the Hui Nationality District, Saihan District, Tumote Left Banner, Tuoketuo County, Qingshuihe County, Lingeer County and Wuchuan County. Encompassing 17,146 square kilometers, the city, with an urban area of 77.9 square kilometers, has a total population of over 2.43 million.
