Lantau Mountain is high on southwestern side and low on northeast. Its main peak, Phoenix Mountain has an altitude of 935 meters and is the second highest peak in Hong Kong.
There is only a small piece of flat land along the stream which runs from the mountain. Tai O Town in the southwest is the most populated place on the island. It became a popular recreational area during the 1970s for Hong Kong residents and is very popular at weekends and holidays.
