Sanya, the second biggest city in Hainan province （Hainan is the biggest special economic zone in the country）, is a central city in the south of Hainan, a transport and communication juncture, the important foreign trade port in the extreme south of the golden coastline opening up to the outside world in the southeast of China. Also, it is the country’s southern gate and new international subtropical beachscape tourism city under construction.
More than 20 nationalities, including Han, Li, Miao, and Hui, inhabit the city. There are altogether more than 463,700 people registered for permanent residence, among them 127,000 are permanent urban residence (in 1998). And Li nationality has 178,000 people living in the city.
