The scenery

The Dragon Palace Scenic Spot has water limestone caves, in-cave waterfalls and the dry limestone caves, plus the natural scene, the stone forest and villages.

The Dragon Palace is more than 3,000 meters long, and it is made up of 5 parts of limestone caves, connected by underground rivers. The locals call them “5 rows of the palace” (row is usually used to refer to any of the several rows of houses within an old-style residential compound). The first row: the gate → Bangke Cliff. The second row: Bangke Cliff → Hauyu Pool. The third row: Huayu pool → Qingyu Cave. The forth row: Qingyu Cave →Fengshu Cave (this part is composed of a clear lake , two tunnels and two underground limestone caves). The fifth row: Whirl Pool →Kwan-yin Cave →small Caihua Lake. The underground river is 28 meters deep at the deepest part and more than 30 meters wide at the widest part. The narrowest part is only enough for small boat to get through.

The first row of Dragon Palace has six “halls”, actually six limestone caves, which are of different sizes. Water collects in the caves and underground lakes form in the six caves, connected by an underground river. Therefore the six halls and lakes look like six melons on a long stem, or the six beads strung together on a green silk ribbon. It is about 800 meters from the first palace to the last one. Tourists can take a boat to go through it.

In front of the Dragon Palace is an open deep pool named Heavenly Pond, or Dragon Pool. It is a small alpine lake, with an area of more than 10,000 sq. meters. The 43-meter-deep lake is clean and green jade. Cliffs covered with ancient trees and wisterias surround the lake. Entering the palace, tourists can see several stalactites, which look like several dragons with bare fangs and brandish claws.

The six halls of the first row of the Dragon Palace have a lot of stalactites, which shape like all kinds of things. The first hall includes the “dragon-shape” stalactites, the stalactites with the shape of birds playing with water, two phoenixes in the sun, gray bear going out of the cave and turtles. The second hall is a “fresco hall”. The main scenes are stalactites which shape like relief frescos, huge ancient banyan trees, golden pheasant standing on one leg, two lions playing a ball, two dragons jumping into water, and seven golden towers. The third hall has the scene of winding paths leading to seclusions, peacocks dipping its head into the water and five dragons protecting the treasures. The forth hall mainly has the scene of beads curtain and the inverted reflection in the water, and glaciers and the white bear. The fifth hall is called the “crystal hall”. It’s grand and magnificent, with the scene of warriors guarding the gate, huge dragons returning the sea, fish and shrimp soldiers, monkeys fishing for the moon and the dragon princess. The six hall is called the “three gorge hall” and has the main scene of the hanging bright curtain, a monster turning back, and the forth.

The Stone Garden: it is also called the small stone forest in Dragon Palace. Stones here have different shapes and are very elegant. Next to it is the dragon palace forest of steles, on which many famous Chinese scholars’ writings were carved.

Lalong Ba (Ba means flatland): tourists can attend the folk dance performance of Buyi nationality. They can learn about the rustic Buyi folkway and folk customs, take part in the performance of “kidnapping the bride”, a kind of local marriage ceremony in which bridegroom pretends to kidnap his bride.

The Milky Way Bridge: it is 100 meters from the stone garden. The small bridge was built over two ravines. Tourists can have a bird-view of the scene of the field and the lake.

Huxue Cave (Huxue means lion’s mouth): it is a dry limestone cave, which is 400 meters long. Stalactites in the cave have the shapes of knives, tiger in a cage, twin poles, and the rhinoceros looking at the moon.

Qunfang Valley (Qunfang means all kinds of flowers): it is a scenic spot showing the three-dimensional zoology, in which are the herbs valley, Longteng Bao (Tunbu construction), Yulong Cave, and the underground hall, and so forth.

Kwan-yin Cave: it is a large in-cave Buddhist hall built in two caves. There are figures of Buddha, Kwan-yin (the mother Buddha), and the 18 arhats. With an expressive face, the 12.6-meter-high figure of Kwan-yin is awful and magnificent.

Whirl Pool: the pool is 120 meters in diameter. Water in the pool whirls from the edge of the pool to its center. There is a deep hollow in the center of the pool. The running water descends sharply at the place, thus forming the unique scenery of whirling pool.
