Nanning, called Yong city or Yong for short is the capital city of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and the political, economic and cultural center of the region. Nanning in 1990s was old, dirty and smoggy with bad traffic jams and the rivers covered with a thick layer of plastic bags. But they have extensively upgraded the city for the China-ASEAN Expo which is held annually in the city. Now the city's main streets and river banks have been beautifully landscaped and restored. Big boulevards have been built and skyscrapers are springing up quickly.
