Shaoguan Overview

Introduction

Shaoguan is a city where a number of ethnic groups live in concentrated communities. There are Han ethnic group as the majority and over thirty ethnic minorities including Yao, Zhuang, Hui, Manchu, Meng, Jing, Miao, Bai, Dong and Tujia, who are distributed in Ruyuan Yao Autonomous County and its bordering parts.

Shaoguan boasts fantastic scenery and rich cultural, historical sights. For example, there are renowned hills, ancient temples, stalactite caves, rip currents, hot springs, virgin forest, precious historical and cultural relics, cliff inscriptions and folk customs. By now more than ten scenic spots have been open to tourists, including the nationally designated scenic spot---Danxia Hill, the attractive national forest park, the first river for drift in China---Nine Torrents and Eighteen Shoals, the nationally designated key monasteries---Nanhua Buddhist Monastery and Yunshan Dajue Buddhist Monastery, the famous Lion Rock where the skull of Mabei Man was unearthed, the Golden Roster Ridge, the Yao Nationality Village in Ruyuan, and the impressive hunting venue of wild animals, etc. In a word, the city of Shaoguan has become one of the four places of interest in Guangdong Province. According to experts, the northern part of Guangdong Province is endowed with rich tourist resources and capable to build the largest base for tourism development in South China. Scenic spots which are now under development include Yangyun Rock in Danxia Hill, Chebaling National Nature Reserve, Nanling National Forest Park, Shaoshi Hill, the Underground Forest, the First Peak in South Guangdong, the former residence of ancient figures as well as Nanhua Hot Spring Vacation Village.

Administration Division: the city of Shaoguan is composed of tree districts, one autonomous county, two cities at the county level, ten community organizations, ninety-six counties, and one nationality village. The three districts are Zhenjiang, Wujiang, and Qujiang; the two cities at the county level are Lechang and Nanxiong City; the five counties include Shixing, Renhua, Penguin, Xinfeng, and Ruyuan Yao autonomous county.
