Foshan Prefecture is located in the central area of Guangdong Province and just situated on the hinterland of Pearl River Delta. Foshan enjoys advantageous geographical position as it connects with Guangzhou on the east and it is adjacent to Hong Kong and Macau to the south.
Foshan Prefecture covers a total area of 3818.64 square kilometers with the urban area of 77.4 square kilometers. Foshan is well known as a famous hometown of overseas Chinese. There are over 1,300,000 people, who are of Foshan descents, living overseas, including more than 600,000 people living in Hong Kong and Macau.
Foshan is an ancient city boasts of a long history. As early as the years of Qin Dynasty and Han Dynasty, people had established quite considerable villages here and they mainly lived on agriculture and fishery. In the second year of the reign of Zhenguan of Tang Dynasty (628 A.D.), three statues of Buddha were dug up in Tapo Hillock of this city. People set up a stele there and named the city “Foshan” which means Buddha Hill in Chinese to monumentalize these Buddha figurines. As the handicraft industry, commerce and culture of Foshan developed very well in, the city earned its fame for various products. Foshan used to be listed as Four Famous Towns in China together with Hankou Town in Hubei, Jingde Town in Jiangxi and Zhuxian Town in Henan.
After the founding of People’s Republic of China, central government approved to setup Foshan City (the urban area of present Foshan Prefecture) on January 21st 1951. On June 6th 1983, a system of “City Leading County” was implemented in Foshan.
