Wuwei Overview

Wuwei, called Liangzhou in ancient times, is located at the eastern part  of Gansu Province. The Wuwei  means powerful army in Chinese. During the West Han Dynasty when General Huo Qubin was sent by Emperor Wu in 121 BC to drive the invading Xiongnu tribe out of the region. The emperor name the region" Wuwei" in praise the general's great victory.

Lying approximately halfway between Lanzhou to the east and Zhangye to the west, Wuwei is a famous historical cultural city and opening city. Presently it governs Liangzhou District, Minqin County, Gulang County and Tianzhu Tibetan Autonomous County. In the region inhabit 38 ethnic groups, mainly the Han, Tibetan, Hui, Mongolian and so on. The Municipal government of Wuwei is located in Wuwei City. .

Wuwei was an important post on the ancient Slik Road. Wuwei is one of famous historical and cultural cities approved by the State Council, the hometown of bronze galloping horse, which is the symbol of Chinese tourism and a strategic pass on the Silk Road. The Shiyang River flows through the entire district from south to north. Weiwu, with abundant products and a reputation of "Silver Wuwei", is a national-level historical and cultural city with various tourist resources including Leitai Han Tomb, Wen Temple, Haizang Pagoda, Tiantishan Mountain Grottoes, Desert Park and so on. Wuwei is a must on ancient Silk Road traveling by land. Wuwei owns convenient transport, with China National Highway 312 and Lanxin Railway line traversing the whole city. The tourism infrastructure and reception condition of Wuwei have been markedly improved.
