Fujian was very inaccessible in ancient time because of its rugged landscapes of plenty of mountains. Since Yingxia Railway opened to traffic in 1956, the transportation of Fujian to outside has been greatly improved. At present, the comprehensive transportation network extending to all parts of the province has been formed.

The main railway lines in the area are Yingxia Railway, Laifu Railway which has both been electronically transformed. The main spurs are Zhangquanxiao Railway, Hengnan Railway, and Zhanglongkai Railway (joined with Meizhou station of Fuangmeishan Railway at the end of 2000). Fujian railway will open up "the second track "toward south in which the main railway stations are Fuzhou and Xiamen. The main provincial trips include: Fuzhou to Wuyi Mountain, Xiamen or Quanzhou to Wuyi Mountain, Fuzhou to Longyan, and Fuzhou to Yong'an, etc.

The whole distance opening to traffic at present has reached 40,000 kilometers. There are five state roads, in which two are state arteries. One is from Tongjiang to Sanya, the other is from Beijing to Fuzhou. Besides, there are state highway 361from Fuzhou to Lanzhou, 324 from Fuzhou to Kunming and 319 from Xiamen to Chengdu. There are still 29 provincial arteries leading to neighboring Wenzhou in Zhejiang, Ruijin, Hengfeng in Jiangxi, Meizhou, Shantou in Guangdong, etc. Tong'an to Longhai section in Fuzhou-Quanzhou-Shantou has opened to traffic.

Fujian has advanced marine transportation since ancient times. During Yuan dynasty, Quanzhou is one of the commercial ports in the world. At present, there are over 50 dock berths in coastal ports, and they have opened to navigation with Shanghai, Hongkong and over60 ports in the world. Ther foreign coastal ports are Fuzhou, Xiamen, Quanzhou, Dongshan, Cheng'ao and Songxia, etc. among them, there are regular cargo vessels for direct navigation between Xiamen and Gaoxiong . And the river transportation mainly surrounds Min River.
