Brief Introduction to the city
Quanzhou is located on the Coast of East Sea and faces Taiwan across the sea. With a long history, it is one of the historical and cultural cities firstly approved by the State Department. It has highly developed maritime traffic and has been one of the four largest foreign trade port of China as early on as Tang Dynasty.
By the end of 1997, Quanzhou has a total population of 6,460,000, predominantly Han Nationality, of which 218,000 are from urban areas. It has an uneven population density, which is high in areas on southeast coast and low in northwest mountain areas. The universal languages in urban and rural areas are Mandarin and Minnan dialect, of which the latter is more customarily used by local citizens, especially those in rural areas.
Quanzhou is a famous chief native place of many Overseas Chinese and compatriots in Taiwan Han nationality. The population of Quanzhou Overseas Chinese distributed in throughout the world reaches the amount of 6.2 million, in Hong Kong and Macao 750 thousand. Many celebrities in overseas fields of economy, science and technology, and culture are originated from Quanzhou. Overseas Chinese are mainly distributed in nations of Southeast Asia. For a long time, the Quanzhou Overseas Chinese and Quanzhou compatriots in Taiwan love their motherland and hometowns and have made great contributions to the constructions in all fields of our city.
Quanzhou is one of the twenty four famous historic and cultural cities firstly approved by the State Department. The assembled history and culture have left over a large number of cultural relics and historic sites. Twelve scenic spots in the city are of national-level protected cultural relics, thirty-seven of provincial level. Quanzhou is “orient’s first largest harbor” in ancient times.
Quanzhou is the starting point of the "maritime Silk Route ". There has been all sorts of religions has been compatible with each other and Sino-Western civilizations blends well together since ancient times. Especially Buddhism, Taoism and Manicheism had once been very popular in Quanzhou. Many religious relics form a unique human landscape, which is of historical and artistic values.
