By the end of the year 2001, the Maonan nationality in Guangxi has a total population of 74,000, which accounts for 0.16% that of the whole autonomous region. The Maonan people are mainly scattered in the Huangjiang Maonan autonomous county in the north of the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region and counties of Hechi, Nandan, Du’an, etc. The quantity of the Maonan people living in Huangjiang takes up about more than 80% the total population of the Maonan nationality. The county of Huangjiang has a reputation of “hometown of Maonan people”. The Maonan nationality has its own language but no written language. It has the Chinese characters in common use.
