By the end of the year 2001, the Gelo nationality in Guangxi has a total population of 2,800, which accounts for 0.01% that of the whole autonomous region. The Gelo nationality calls itself "Tuli" and "Yake". It has the minimum population among the eleven national minorities in Guangxi. The Gelo people are mainly scattered in De'e, Changfa, Yancha, Changme and Zhelang of the Longlin autonomous county of all nationalities in the northwest of Guangxi. The Gelo nationality has its own language. At present merely about one fourth of them can speak the Gelo language. As they live scattered, the Gelo language varies greatly with places. Even the Gelo people living in the same county often can't communicate with each other. The Han language is the main vehicle of communication for most of the Gelo people. Quite a few of them can also speak the Miao language, Yi language or Buyi language. The Gelo nationality has no written language of its own. They generally use the Chinese characters.
