The May 12 earthquake forced Guo Guo to leave the Wolong nature reserve but it could not stop her from giving birth to twins in Chengdu.

She became the first giant panda Sunday to give birth anywhere in the world this year.

The elder of the two cubs of the proud 12-year-old mother weighed 170 gram at birth Sunday.

Guo Guo was among the six pandas that were shifted from the quake-hit China Giant Panda Research Center in Hetaoping base of the Wolong nature reserve to neighboring Ya'an city in Sichuan province last month.

Till May 12, the base was home to 63 pandas, one of which was killed in the quake and another is missing.

The surviving pandas were been moved to panda breeding bases in Fujian, Yunnan and Guangdong provinces.
